A few things...

Hey Everybody,
Spring, 2026. I suppose there is a lot I could write, which means there is a lot I will end up not writing, haha. Enjoyed playing the Aster Cafe on Friday, April 10th, with the new Adaptors line-up of me, Marc, Corey and Gavin Haskin on mandolin! This was, I think, the 3rd or 4th time we've played a show with this line-up, and it went really well. I debuted 3 new songs- "I Wish I Knew You When", "Mona, Won't You Come Around" and "Shovels & Brooms"- and played a couple others- "Birthday", "Heretic"- for only the second or third time. It was a cool nite!
I feel very lucky with the rotation we've been playing lately- 318 Cafe, Aster Cafe, and metroNOME Brewerey. They are all great rooms and I feel privileged to be playing them on a fairly regular basis.
On a personal level, some tough times lately on the homefront as Laura has been struggling a bit. At the same time, we are excited as Jonathan is set to graduate from Indiana University on May 9th with a degree in Journalism. He will then head off to a small island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean- Tuvalu- and Jakarta to report on the effect of climate change. He will live on the proceeds of a grant he wrote and was awarded. Cool stuff, we are super proud of / happy for him.
As for me, I am itching to record my next record. I have written and performed a bunch of "new" songs since releasing "Ghost" in 2022. More to come...
Happy Spring, Folks!!

Happy New Year, Everybody! 2026 is off to a rough start in many ways, most notably with the I.C.E. activity, and resulting protests and deaths, on the streets of Minneapolis. Today, I posted my song- "Shovels & Brooms"- in response to all that's going on in my beloved adopted city. I'll write more soon, but, for now, I hope you are doing great. And, especially for those here in the Cities, stay Warm and stay Safe!! Bob

Summer!!

Hey Everybody!
I hope Summer 2025 has treated you well thus far! As the world seems to grow crazier everyday, I do hope you've been able to find a few places in which you can take refuge and solace and find the Joy and Love that persist.
My Summer has been flying by and, unfortunately, I have not accomplished much, haha. I did, however, just return from a long journey during which I drove from Mpls to Cleveland, then Cleveland to Bloomington, IN. In Bloomington, I picked up my son Jonathan, spent the nite at his apartment, and we returned to Cleveland for a couple days to attend a couple Guardians games. We then drove back to Bloomington, where I again spent the nite at his apartment and, the next day, I drove back to Mpls. All told, I put around 2600 miles on my trusty Mitsubishi!! Despite a pretty terrible tumble down a steep flight of stairs, I had a great week spending time with Jonathan and enjoying the company and hospitality of my good buddy Eric Hanson.
Over the next few months, I am excited to be playing the following shows-

*Thursday, July 31st- Hallberg Center for the Arts as part of their Songwriters In the Round Series. I have played in this Series once before and am excited to return!

*Saturday, August 16th- MetroNome Brewery. My band- Bob Frey & the Adaptors- will play here for the third time. A very cool space, the Fingal's Cave room looks and sounds great and we love playing here!

*Thursday, October 23rd- 318 Cafe. This is another show with my band and another venue we love to play!

Enjoy the rest of your Summer and we'd love to see you at a show!

Bob

"These Days Are Not Forever..."

Hey Everybody,

"These days are not forever, it's just a place in time
Temporary, like a train
If we're desolate it's only for a while
My Love, we'll be okay..."

So go the lyrics to one of the bridges in my 2004 song "Like A Train", from my 2007 record of the same name. I think of them today and I send the sentiment out to you.
We'll be okay...
Much Love,
Bob

Where'd the Summer Go?

8/5/2024

Hey Everybody!
Writing on Monday, August 5th, wondering what happened to my Summer. It went so fast, and, now I am back on contract for my job teaching at the Perpich Center for Arts Education. Crazy!
My big news, I suppose, is I've faced some health struggles over the past year. Most recently, I elected to have the right lobe of my thyroid removed due to the disovery of a 27mm lesion. The only way to tell if it was cancerous was to cut it out, so, I had a thyroid lobectomy on July 2nd. As it turns out, and, fortunately, the pathology determined the lesion was benign. Phew!
Recovery has gone well and I am hopeful that my singing voice has not been affected. I'll find out for sure on Thursday, September 5th, when my band- newly dubbed "the Adaptors"- will make our first appearance at the 318 Cafe in Excelsior, MN. The 318 is a very cool and intimate room that consistently presents top-notch musicians from the Cities and beyond. I am honored and excited to be playing there!
Due to my surgery and some other health-related issues, I have not played much lately. Most of my Summer was spent hanging out with Laura and watching baseball with my son Jonathan, who spent the time between his Sophomore and Junior years of college laid up at our Minneapolis home, recovering from his own big surgery to repair his left knee, which he hurt playing basketball with his college roommate. The Summer of Surgeries!
That's all for now, but, I look forward to getting back to playing and hope to announce a few more shows in the coming months!
Take care, Everybody!

Some Cool Shows!!

4/20/2024

Hey Everybody,
I hope Spring is treating you well. I'm doing alright, dealing with some medical issues, but, still doing pretty well. While I was disappointed that the Insight Brewing Sunday Sessions series was cancelled, including my scheduled April 21st show with Emmy Woods, I am excited to have a couple of other cool shows booked.
I will be playing at the always cool 331 Club in Northeast Minneapolis on Wednesday, May 8th @9:30 p.m. I will be joined by my awesome little band- Rachel Calvert, Marc Conklin and Corey Hess.
I am also very, very excited to make my debut at the 318 Cafe in Excelsior, MN. This great little room has a long history of offering quality music- along with great food & drinks- and I am feeling really good about playing my songs there. Rachel, Marc and Corey are in on that one, too! If you can make it, I think you'll agree it's a pretty perfect room for our music!
Finally, I've written a couple songs in 2024 that I am looking forward to playing live. "Young and Strong In Copenhagen" is a song for my son Jonathan, and "A 4 Pint Decision" is a song for anybody who has ever made that ill-advised, late nite, impaired text or phone call. I'll play both of these songs at 331 and, I'm sure, at 318, too.
That's all for now, I hope to see you at one of these shows and I hope to be announcing a few more soon, too.
Much Love,
Bob

2024!!

Hey Everybody!
Happy New Year! 2023 was a great year, musically speaking, and I'm looking forward to continuing and completing a few important creative endeavors in 2024. It was cool to close the year playing an opening set at The Trailhead for my friends the Long Honeymoon. Cool spot, great band!
While not musical, I am rededicating myself to completing my book- "Song For Elle"- a chronicle of the cancer journey my Wife, Son and I have shared since February 2011.
In terms of music, I have a few shows booked and am working on booking more. Playing for the first time at Insight Brewing as part of their Sunday Sessions (April 21st), hosted by my pal Emmy Woods, should be cool, and I am excited to return to 331 Club on May 8th.
Last night, I finished my first song of the year, titled "Young and Strong In Copenhagen". I wrote it for my son and am excited to work it up and play it live. The first song of the year is also always important as I always fear, as the year begins, "Will this be the year I get no songs?" So, glad to have written this one pretty early on!
I could, and should, write much more. But, I'm going to get rolling right now, will check back in, umm, sometime soon!
Happy New Year!

A Good Run of Shows!!

Hey Everybody,
As I look forward to my show at Icehouse next week- Wednesday, October 11th- I am feeling very happy and grateful for, among other things, a really cool bunch of shows this year. 331 Club, White Squirrel, IceHouse, Aster Cafe, the Hallberg Center for the Arts... These are all great spots to play and I feel privileged and fortunate to have played there. Along those lines, I feel the same way about having shared the stage with some great musicians this year, including Taylor James Donskey, Emmy Woods, Charlotte Montgomery, Belle Curves, Hana Fleur, Cole Allen, Doyle Turner, and, of course, my frequent collaborators Rachel Calvert, Marc Conklin, and Corey Hess! And, I am always honored and grateful to play to pretty full houses! If you have come out to see and hear me, thank you so much!!
As I mentioned above, I have a show next week at IceHouse, where I will be joined by Rachel, Marc, and Corey. Emmy Woods will play an opening set. I will play my newest song, "Muse", and maybe cover a cool Brett Dennen song called "So Long, Sweet Misery". Have I mentioned I really love playing at IceHouse, haha?
Finally, I was surprised and delighted to learn that the Hallberg Center show was filmed, streamed and recorded. I will be soon be posting videos of the songs I played, as well as the entire performance with songs from Cole Allen and Doyle Turner. It's pretty cool!
Alright, folks, that is all for now. Oh, except to say I had a great birthday on Sunday, October 1st, hung out with Laura and enjoyed the lemongrass chicken she made me for dinner and the French Silk pie she made me for dessert!
Take care, everybody!

Emmy Woods & Hallberg Center & IceHouse

Hey Everybody,

A few quick things on a September Friday evening-

*I had tons of fun playing at Aster Cafe on Thursday, September 7, 2023. My pal Taylor James Donskey sounded great, the room is as cool as ever, and I was so pleased to see a solid crew of folks come out to check out my songs. A bunch of friends, old & new. The room sounded so good, and it was the rare nite where, when I finished, I felt like I played pretty well, haha! Excellent!!

*I'm looking forward to playing the Hallberg Center for the Arts in a couple weeks on 9/28/23. I'll be sharing the stage with PK Mayo and Cole Allen and I'm thinking it's gonna be a great nite in a great space with some great players.

*I emailed today with the fabulous Emmy Woods, a Twin Cities songwriter with whom I shared a stage at 331 Club back in April. I really love her stuff, and am very happy to say she will be opening for me at IceHouse on Wednesday, October 11th @8:00 p.m.

That's all for now, hope everyone doing great!!
Much Love,
Bob
